State of the Phlock 2011

As always, Parrot Head chapters around the world made significant contributions to the welfare of the environment, their community and to their fellow man in 2010 … and they had a BLAST while doing so! Meeting of the Minds, in the face of uncharacteristically cold weather, was another unqualified success featuring four full days of good friends & good music, with some libations thrown in, and our visitors truly did “Party with a Purpose!” Some 230 PHiP Club Members hauled themselves out of bed on Saturday morning to participate in the Zonta Walk with Team ParrotHead raising more than $20,000, once again, about half of the event total. Parrot Heads also contributed to Wesley House Family Services, the KW Police Athletic League and the Florida Keys SPCA to the tune of more than $20,000 while simultaneously donating an entire van load of toys to the Salvation Army for their annual holiday toy drive. In a truly humanitarian effort, Parrot Heads also donated a record high 111 pints of blood to the Community Blood Center of South Florida, a 69% increase overall, in what has become the local blood bank’s largest blood drive of the year. Not to be outdone, the Margaritaville-sponsored Gypsy Video Contest raised more than $9,000 which was gifted to the Florida Keys Cancer Foundation.

Beginning on April 21, 2010, Parrot Heads across the country stepped up to assist in the mitigation of damages caused by the worst oil spill in U.S. history, the Deepwater Horizon Gulf Oil Disaster. In true PH fashion, our chapters & members contributed dollars, needed supplies, volunteer time & effort in virtually all areas, including wildlife rescue & rehabilitation, water quality monitoring & control, beach cleanup and oil reclamation efforts all along the entire shoreline of our beloved Northern Caribbean. Parrot Head efforts were rewarded with the man himself, Jimmy Buffett, hosting a benefit concert on the beach in Gulf Shores , AL on July 11 which was attended by tens of thousands of people in Hawaiian shirts and parrot hats and broadcast live worldwide on CMT and Sirius XM.

In what has become the norm, the “ParrotHead Nation” continued to grow and prosper as we added a total of twelve new chapters to our ranks. What began with the Atlanta Parrot Head Club 20 years ago has grown exponentially as we ended 2010 with an all-time high of 240 chapters in the United States , Canada and Australia … 3 different countries, 47 states and 4 Canadian provinces. Our total membership showed another increase of 3.1% with almost 28,000 dedicated, fun-loving Parrot Heads amongst the ranks. Again, it’s apparent that the “ParrotHead Nation” is not only alive and well, but continues to thrive.

Now, for the big news … With the economy still in a stagnant state, Parrot Head Clubs collectively raised for and/or donated more than $2.9 million to charitable organizations in 2010, an increase of 5.5% over the previous year. Equally significant, Parrot Heads carried on the tradition of volunteerism as 2010 saw an increase of 15.8% as chapters worldwide donated an estimated 215,000 man-hours to philanthropic and environmental activities. The upshot … In the period 2002 – 2010, Parrot Head Clubs have collectively contributed more than $22 million and approximately 2.7 million man-hours to aid our communities, our environment and our fellow man!

The PHiP commitment to education was again evidenced with our continued endowment of the Mary Loraine “Peets” Buffett Memorial Scholarship awarded annually by the Alumni Association of Jimmy Buffett’s alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi . Additionally, the PHiP scholarship program again awarded scholarships to 3 qualified & worthy candidates after evaluating close to 100 applicants.

In 2010, PHiP retained its National Status with both the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life campaign and the Alzheimer’s Association’s Memory Walk program and Parrot Heads continue to be the single largest supporter of the Zonta Club of Key West with contributions made during Meeting of the Minds. For many of our chapters, Special Olympics is a favored cause while many Clubs prepare & serve a monthly meal to their local Ronald McDonald Houses.

And, there’s more to the story! These numbers, while spectacular, do not include those efforts which are not measured by dollars or man-hours and Parrot Heads never cease to amaze in their creativity:

Parrot Heads are always gathering stuff … canned goods, pet supplies, clothing, pop tops, old cell phones, used ink cartridges, and, of course, toys; all distributed to the appropriate agencies that get the goods to where they do the most good. OH, and let’s not forget the trash … Virtually every Club works diligently to keep our nation’s beaches, lakes, and highways clean with regular trash collection sessions.

Parrot Heads are doers … Many chapters sponsor Bowling tournaments, Volleyball tournaments, Golf tournaments, a Cornhole tournament and even a Kickball tournament. Chili and gumbo cook-offs are also favorite fundraisers for a number of Clubs.

Parrot Heads participate … Most all Parrot Head Clubs build and enter a float in their local community parades, be it Christmas, Easter, Independence Day, St. Patrick’s Day … You name it; if there’s a local parade, Parrot Heads will be prancing and no less than two dozen chapters won awards in 2009 for Best of Show, Best Float, etc.

From Poker Runs & Pub Crawls to the dreaded Polar Plunge, the picture is clear … the good deeds that Parrot Heads perform for the benefit of the community, the environment and our fellow man often cannot be measured in quantitative terms, yet are so vital to the recipients and should be a constant source of satisfaction to each of us.

In the annals of PHiP history, 2010 will be recorded as another banner year … We did, in fact, make a difference and we left this world a little better than we found it. Along the way, we managed to have a lot of fun … we cavorted with old friends, we made new friends and, sadly, we bid farewell to far too many beloved friends.

So, to each and every one of you, a heartfelt THANK YOU for a job well done! You truly are “Angels in Tropical Shirts” and you should be very proud of yourselves and your accomplishments.

Spring is here, summer is nigh and the concert season is upon us … Time to do what we do best: Have fun and “Party with a Purpose!”

Till next time, may all your dreams be tropical!

Recap for Meeting of the Minds 2010: Gypsies in the Palace

Well……what happens in Key West stays in Key West is the saying but I am going to share with you some of the finer moments of MOTM. If you were not able to attend this year, I am sorry to say that you missed a great time despite the rain, the wind and the chilly temperatures. CPHC had 36 members that made their way down island for the best show in town. Once again, our Lost Shaker of Salt Happy Hour at the Conch Republic Seafood was a success with a good time had by all. Each day and night was filled with the best Trop Rock music around! We did the old man proud by partying with a purpose. Parrot Heads in Paradise was able to give Wesley House, The SPCA of Monroe County a donation of $5,000 each. Over 91 units of blood were donated which was a record for the blood mobile. The Trop Rock performer of the year was Howard Livingston.

I attended the club leaders meeting and met the oldest active parrot head, Larry Dungan, age 90! He was having a great time! Some interesting facts that were given during the club leaders meeting: Since 2006, PHIP has been keeping track of all monies donated by all of the chapters. To date that amount is 19.2 million dollars. That is amazing! Your work with CPHC is included in that figure. CPHC had acknowledgement in the PHIP financial report for our $3,000 donation to the scholarship fund. Yeah CPHC! There were 6,000 tickets available to parrot head clubs for Jimmy’s concerts this season, only 4,000 were used. There are now 238 parrot head clubs around the world. The parrot head nation continues to grow and with that growth many causes are helped.

Now to my favorite part of the convention, the music! Peter Mayer’s concert at the Studios of Key West was by far the most amazing evening. Joining Peter were brother Jim Mayer on bass and R.Scott Bryant on percussion. If you love Beatles music, this was the concert to hear as they played many cuts from Peter’s latest CD Goodbye Hello. New arrangements of those familiar songs we all love. Thursday evening at the Casa brought out the Boat Drunks warming up the audience despite a few rain sprinkles. Mac McAnally fired up the crowd his story telling and amazing songs. He was joined by Mr. Utley, Robert Greenidge, Peter Mayer, Jim Mayer and the lovely Tina Gulickson known as Club Trini. There was something about standing on the beach singing Christmas songs under palm trees, it was a moment! Club Trini has a new Christmas CD out this season and they played some of the songs for all to enjoy. When they played Gypsies in the Palace the crowd was a rocking! It was a great night of music for all. The temperatures on Friday became a little chillier and the winds began to blow but that did not keep this band of gypsies from singing and dancing on Duval Street at the annual Street Fest. CPHC’s own John Patti IV was seen and heard with many performers throughout the convention. Check out John’s new CD Cabana Breeze! Saturday’s Beach Bash was chilly but the bands kept the crowd warm. All in all, it was another great time in Key West! So much music, late nights at Louie’s, too little time to take it all in! I think we punched all of our fun tickets for MOTM 2010. Make plans to join the phlock as we return for Don’t Stop the Carnival MOTM 2011 which will be the 20th anniversary. You never know who will be stopping by!

Till the next time we meet!

State of the Phlock 2010

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times …” So said Charles Dickens and so it was with the year 2009 around the ParrotHead Nation. In the face of what’s been called the worst economy since the Great Depression, many of our respected leaders and members found themselves out of work through no fault of their own. Imagine how difficult it must be to embrace the concept of helping others when you’re desperately trying to keep your own world from tumbling down.

Nevertheless, in true Parrot Head fashion, chapters around the world made significant contributions to the welfare of the environment, their community and to their fellow man … and they had a BLAST while doing so! Meeting of the Minds was an unqualified success with appearances by Little Feat and Club Trini, among others, and our visitors truly did “Party with a Purpose!” Some 200+ Parrot Heads participated in the Zonta Walk with Team ParrotHead raising approximately $22,000, more than half of the event total. Parrot Heads also contributed to Wesley House Family Services, the KW Police Athletic League and the Florida Keys SPCA to the tune of more than $20,000 while simultaneously donating an entire van load of toys to the Salvation Army for their annual holiday toy drive. In a truly humanitarian effort, Parrot Heads also donated some 75 pints of blood to the Community Blood Center of South Florida in what has become the local blood bank’s largest blood drive of the year. Not to be outdone, the Margaritaville-sponsored Class Clown Contest raised approximately $10,000 which was gifted to the Boys & Girls Club, the Florida Keys Children’s Shelter, WomanKind and Heron-Peacock Supported Living.

In what has become the norm, the “ParrotHead Nation” continued to grow and prosper as we added a total of eleven new chapters to our ranks. What began with the Atlanta Parrot Head Club 20 years ago has grown exponentially as we ended 2009 with an all-time high of 237 chapters in the United States , Canada and Australia … 3 different countries, 47 states, 3 Canadian provinces and one U.S. Territory. Our total membership showed another increase with almost 27,000 dedicated, fun-loving Parrot Heads amongst the ranks. Again, it’s apparent that the “ParrotHead Nation” is not only alive and well, but continues to thrive.

Now, for the big news … Even in the face of an economic downturn, Parrot Head Clubs collectively raised for and/or donated approximately $2.8 million to charitable organizations in 2009. Equally significant, Parrot Heads carried on the tradition of volunteerism as 2009 saw chapters worldwide donate an estimated 180,000 man-hours to philanthropic and environmental activities. The upshot … In the period 2002 – 2009, Parrot Head Clubs have collectively contributed more than $19.2 million and approximately 2.3 million man-hours to aid our communities, our environment and our fellow man!

The PHiP commitment to education was bolstered on two fronts as we were recognized by the Jimmy Buffett’s alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi , for our continued and generous endowment of the Mary Loraine “Peets” Buffett Memorial Scholarship awarded annually by the USM Alumni Assoc. And, after years on the drawing board, the PHiP scholarship program came to fruition with the committee evaluating some 60 applicants before awarding the first scholarships to 3 worthy candidates.

In 2009, PHiP retained its National Status with both the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life campaign and the Alzheimer’s Association’s Memory Walk program and Parrot Heads continue to be the single largest supporter of the Zonta Club of Key West with contributions made during Meeting of the Minds.

Parrot Heads Collect Things … canned goods, pet supplies, clothing, pop tops, old cell phones, used ink cartridges, and, of course, toys; all distributed to the appropriate agencies that get the goods to where they do the most good. OH, and let’s not forget the trash … Virtually every Club works diligently to keep our nation’s beaches, lakes, and highways clean with regular trash collection sessions.

Parrot Heads Compete … Many chapters sponsor Bowling tournaments, Volleyball tournaments, Golf tournaments and even a Cornhole tournament. Chili and gumbo cook-offs are also a favorite fundraiser for a number of Clubs.

Parrot Heads March … Most all Parrot Head Clubs build and enter a float in their local community parades, be it Christmas, Easter, Independence Day, St. Patrick’s Day … You name it; if there’s a local parade, Parrot Heads will be prancing and no less than two dozen chapters won awards in 2009 for Best of Show, Best Float, etc.

In the annals of PHiP history, 2009 will be recorded as a good year … We did, in fact, make a difference and we left this world a little better than we found it. Along the way, we managed to have a lot of fun, we cavorted with old friends, we made new friends and, sadly, we bid farewell to far too many beloved friends.

So, to each and every one of you, a heartfelt THANK YOU for a job well done! You truly are “Angels in Tropical Shirts” and you should be very proud of yourselves and your accomplishments.

Meeting of the Minds Follow Up

Folks,

I would like to thank all of the folks that made the trip to Key West and represented CPHC. A good time was had by all! As I met our fellow CPHCer’s through out the weekend I was excited to see that everyone had a great big smile and was having a blast. It truly was a good time and true to form as a “PARTY WITH A PURPOSE”.

I would like to send kudos to several club members who participated in the Zonta 5k run/walk: Tom Schisler, Kevin Budney, Marie and Rob Betz. Thank you for taking the time to participate for such a worthy cause!

Kudos to Tom Schisler for donating blood for the blood drive! You are a good man! (I have this needle phobia thingy – panic attack – I’m a mess!) Let me know if I missed any other club member that was brave and gave blood.

Below you will find some final words from our Director of Conventions, wrap up for the blood drive as well as the toy drive. Parrot Heads are amazing people!!!

Our Lost Shaker of Salt Gathering at the Conch was a huge success with Woody Hall finding that Lost Shaker. Woody received a $25.00 gift certificate to Margaritaville. Great job Woody!

The winner of this year’s Golden Coconut award was the San Antonio Parrot Head Club! Congrats to a job well done! CPHC won this award in 1997.

The CPHC Board of Directors would like to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving!

We hope that you will enjoy this day gathered with family and friends.

Thanks for all you do to make a difference!
